World War 2 is a global conflict which involved most of the world's nations. It lasted from 1939 to 1945. There were two main military alliances which were the Allies and Axis. It is the most widespread war in history and it involved more than 100 million military personnel.
A main cause of World War 2 was the failure of appeasement in the Treaty of Versaille. The Treaty was deemed unfair as it placed many restrictions on Germany. Thus, Adolf Hitler was voted to power as he promised to rip up the Treaty of Versaille. The war was instigated when Germany and Slovakia invaded Poland.
In the end, the war ended with the Allies victory of Germany and Japan. Japan surrendered after two of its cities were hit badly by the American atomic bomb. Germany surrendered after Berlin was captured and Hitler committed suicide. 50 to 70 million people were killed in World War 2. This included the use of the atomic bomb and the Holocaust, where the Germans killed approximately 6 million Jews as they discriminated them. The atomic bomb killed 200,000 people instantly and caused many people to die from radiation in the following months.
The United Nations(UN) was established to foster international cooperation and prevent future conflicts. The Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers, which led to the Cold War, which lasted for the next 46 years. Meanwhile, the influence of European great powers started to decline, while the decolonization of Asia and Africa began. Also, most countries whose industries had been damaged moved towards economic recovery.
Wars are destructive and it affects everyone involved in it. No one ever wins in war as there will always be loss. Is the atomic bombing justified? It involved the killing of many innocent civilians. However, if weighed with the option where the Americans invade Japan, it is still a better option as lesser lives would be lost. Are wars really necessary? Are wars for the greater good of the world?
